The Coast

At Mataka, the hills taper toward the Pacific, and the coastline draws a wide arc of sand and rock along the water's edge. At the northern tip of the Bay of Islands, the iconic Nine Pin rises from the ocean.

Mataka is more than a private estate. It is one of New Zealand's great sanctuaries, holding what may be the largest kiwi population on a single private property in New Zealand, maintained through an intensive predator control programme across 860 acres of dedicated conservation land.
